Shiatsu for Pregnancy and Birth

  • Shiatsu for Pregnancy and Birth

Shiatsu, a form of Japanese acupressure based on Chinese Medicine and acupuncture, is considered to be particularly helpful and nourishing during pregnancy and an ideal preparation for birthing.
The soft and at times stronger pressure with fingers or hands on the body meridians, joint mobilization, and gentle stretches encourage the flow of energy in the body. A shiatsu session brings about a sense of deep relaxation, lightness and harmony.

Many typical pregnancy symptoms may be alleviated through shiatsu therapy, such as:

  • Morning sickness in early pregnancy
  • Back Problems
  • Symphysis pubis dysfunction
  • Iliosacral and sciatic nerve pain
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrom
  • Heartburn
  • Headaches
  • Lack of energy
  • Emotional imbalance and unrest
  • Tension and anxiety
  • Moxa may be used until 38th week of pregnancy to bring the baby from breech presentation into optimum foetal positioning for birth
  • Shiatsu may help induce labour if passed term
  •

Katia Wharton is a trained Shiatsu therapist (ESI – SGS) with additional training in perinatal Shiatsu. She has worked in the maternity ward of a local hospital where she accompanied many women during labour, making use of shiatsu and massage techniques as well as her knowledge as yoga teacher.
